Going to college isn’t for everyone.
“All through my life it was, ‘if you don’t go to college you’re going to end up on the streets,’ ” Morgan said. “Everybody’s so gung-ho about going to college.”
Yet there seems to be a disconnected between the message we send children and the reality of our professional world. There is a wide range of skilled work that is high paying, challenging and DOES NOT REQUIRE a college degree. Everything from traditional skilled labor like plumbers, electricians and welders to Google’s IT Support Professional Certificate on Coursera. The average salary for all of these positions is between $60k-$80k.
To be perfectly honest, many of my most successful friends never completed a four year degree. Instead, they opted to go into coding, networking and various other IT professional positions and worked there way up into high level positions.
There is a wild range of opportunity for so many different types of people that we should really present all opportunities and career paths to our children.
